variable frequency drives
how they work ........ please read before you call me at 3 am and ask why I sent the wrong motor .it could happen lol.
sometimes I get calls ,and the question is why did you send me a 220 volt 3 phase motor . I don't have 220 volt and I definitely don't have 3 phase power in my residential home . I did send you the right stuff .
the answer is if you want a variable speed drive to control your motor this is how they are set up .
the drive acts as a phase converter
1 phase to 3 phase & sometimes a step up from 110 to 220
the drive takes 1 phase 110V / 220V converts it to 220 volt 3 phase power to run the motor .
the speed is regulated by varying the HZ sent to the motor . ac electric power has a 60 hz frequency per second . drives lower this frequency to slow down the speed . for example a motor that is 220 V 3 phase 60 hz rpm 3450 at 60 hz will turn at 3450 rpm & 30 hz = 1725 rpm 15 hz = 862.5 .and at 0 hz the rpm will be 0
the amount of power needed to run a belt grinder just would not work with a simple 110 volt dimmer switch . besides the 110 volt 1 phase motors have a big capacitor that would blow up if you did try it .
NEMA 4 /DUST PROOF DRIVES
& IP 51
NEMA 4 Enclosures constructed for either indoor or outdoor use to provide a degree of protection to personnel against access to hazardous parts; to provide a degree of protection of the equipment inside the enclosure against ingress of solid foreign objects (falling dirt and windblown dust); to provide a degree of protection with respect to harmful effects on the equipment due to the ingress of water (rain, sleet, snow, splashing water, and hose directed water); and that will be undamaged by the external formation of ice on the enclosure.

out all the drives I have used over the years this is the best overall performer . speed regulation is precise down to the 10th of a second . has ramp up and ramp down that can be set to stop or start the drive at a set speed . I have mine set at 7 seconds start and 10 seconds to stop .
I use a 3 hp 220volt ac tech nema 4 to run my 2 hp stainless steel BALDOR motor . I push that motor hard ,lean into it and run it at top speed 7500 SFPM and it will push right through everything I throw at it .
I used a baldor VS1MX nema 4 harsh duty and a kbac 27d and neither came close to this drive .
in my opinion this is a far superior variable speed drive compared to the kbac series drives . optional speed potentiometer can be set up on these drives as shown in first picture
if you want a a reliable tough drive then this is it . highly recommended.
